"Pure Religion will be fascinating reading for all who are interested in the well-being of their fellowmen and women, a wonderful gift and a valued addition to every personal library. It is a chronicle of inspired history and a wellspring for good works," the First Presidency states on a card in each book.
The 415-page book was written by Glen L. Rudd, a former member of the Seventy. Researching and writing the book, which is an insightful history of the welfare program from before its formal organization in 1936 until the present, was a three-year project. The book is available for $7, which includes shipping, at the Salt Lake Distribution Center (item 35247), 1999 W. 1700 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84104.The edition-bound hardback book contains a treasure trove of historic photographs about the Church's welfare program never before gathered. Included are more than 250 photos of men and women involved in welfare projects spanning some 65 years. These photos reflect the worldwide reach of welfare into such countries as India, Russia and countries in Africa.
Chapters cover such topics as "Humble Beginnings," "Church Welfare Operations Today," "Responses to Worldwide Disasters," "Great Welfare Leaders," and "Welfare Success Stories." At the end of each chapter are "Gems of Pure Religion," which are touching anecdotes that open a window into the human side of those the program has served.
Brother Rudd has served in Church welfare for 50 years, including 25 years as coordinator of Welfare Square. In writing the book, he drew from his extensive experiences, his acquaintance with the early and current leaders of welfare, his library of historical documents, and the resources of the Church. The book will be a cherished addition to every personal library, inspiring the thinking and efforts of members of the Church worldwide.
