The completion of a 26-foot-long wagon train panel continued the progress on the "This Is the Place" monument, scheduled for dedication the following year, according to a report in the Oct. 26, 1946, Church News.
The monument was scheduled to be dedicated during 1947 activities commemorating the centennial of the arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley.
John D. Giles, executive secretary of the "This Is the Place" monument commission, announced that the wagon train panel was finished and ready to be shipped.
The report stated: "Elder Giles recently returned from a trip east in which he conferred with Mahonri M. Young, noted sculptor and descendant of Brigham Young, who is in charge of the monument. Elder Giles also inspected the work of enlarging and casting the huge figures."
