BYU's women's volleyball team advanced to the NCAA regional tournament after beating the Pac-10 powerhouse Washington Huskies Dec. 7 in the second round of the national tournament, 15-7, 8-15, 15-8, 15-7.

The Cougars entered the national tournament as the champions of the Western Athletic Conference and had a bye the first round because of their favorable seed.Although traditional contenders in the NCAA, this year's young team fell on hard times at the beginning of the season, winning only two of its first eight matches.

But since then, the Cougars have reeled off 24 consecutive victories, including a win over the University of Hawaii, then ranked No. 3 in the nation, to win the finals of the WAC championship tournament, 6-15, 15-11, 15-13, 16-18, 15-8.

Gale Johnson, BYU senior outside hitter, was named most valuable player of the WAC tournament.

"

The team membersT worked so hard, and they just keep getting better and better," said coach Elaine Michaelis.

The regional tournament resumed Dec. 12 in Honolulu, when the BYU team took on the University of Pacific.
