Centenarians
- Marie Stens Weber of the Grant 6th Ward, Salt Lake Grant Stake, celebrated her 100th birthday recently. She emigrated from Denmark to the United States in 1904 with her parents and sisters and they settled in Richmond, Utah. She has filled callings in both Primary and the Relief Society and was a visiting teacher for more than 40 years. She married George Weber. She has one son, five grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
- Cecilia Sabin Johnson celebrated her 100th birthday on July 10, 1996, in Homedale, Idaho. She was born in St. David, Ariz., to Parley Pratt and Sarah Cecilia Smith Sabin. She married Benjamin Franklin Johnson in 1915 and they had 10 children. She has served as stake Primary secretary and in a Relief Society presidency, and filled a stake mission. She has musical talent and played basketball in high school. Sister Johnson is a member of the Homedale 1st Ward, Caldwell Idaho Stake.
Government
- Grant M. Patch, president of the Oklahoma Oklahoma City Mission, was recently invited to be the Oklahoma State Senate chaplain for a week. He was sponsored by State Sen. Helen Cole. In addition to being given floor privileges and invited to give the invocation each day, Pres. Patch was invited to speak to the entire Senate body. He chose to speak on the importance of the family. Each member of the Senate was provided with a copy of Proclamation on Families, issued by the First Presidency.
Athletics
- Ryan Bowman Andrus, a priest in the Timpview 6th Ward, Orem Utah Timpview Stake, recently won the 3200-meter run at the Great Southwest Invitational Track Meet in Tempe, Ariz. His winning time was 9 minutes, 11 seconds, in competition against athletes from seven Western states. Ryan, who will be a senior at Mountain View High School in Orem, also won the Utah state 5-A championship in the 3200. He is the priesthood pianist in his ward.
- Ferron Sonderegger and Doug Stutz of Ricks College each earned National Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors for the 1995-96 school year. Brother Sonderegger, a high councilor in the Rexburg Idaho Center Stake, won the award after leading the women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the national tournament at Odessa, Texas. Brother Stutz, a stake missionary in the Rexburg Idaho Center Stake, was recognized after leading the Ricks cross country team to a national championship in upstate New York. The two have coached together at Ricks for nine years.
- Carson Heussner, a priest in the Chandler 7th Ward, Chandler Arizona Stake, received the 1995-96 Outstanding Diver Award after winning the 5A high school region diving championship. He also won medals in the U.S. Diving Invitational at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and won two medals at the Junior Olympic Region Diving Championships, also in Las Vegas. He was selected to dive for Team USA in competition in Australia this summer.
Service
- Mike Daniels of the Tempe 10th Ward, Tempe Arizona West Stake, has been named the Students Against Driving Drunk National Student of the Year. He was recognized for his work in promoting SADD events as a member of the organization's Marcos de Niza High School chapter and state student advisory council. Among other activities, he lobbied the Arizona State Legislature for a lower legal blood-alcohol level, spoke on radio panels and at conferences, and assisted police in underage-buying stings.
- Glendon Johnson a high councilor in the Homestead Florida Stake, has received the Silver Medallion Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. It is presented for outstanding community service. Brother Johnson, the chief executive officer and president of the John Alden Financial Corporation, was honored for his service to Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, the National Negro College Fund Drive and for other activities such as promoting volunteer work by his employees.
Military
- Linda S. Standage of the Eden Ward, San Antonio Texas Stake, has been selected to become the next Chief of the Army Medical Specialist Corps. In that position, she will have responsibility over all dietitians, occupational therapists, physical therapists and physician assistants in the U.S. Army. She has been awarded the "A" Professional Excellence, and has received numerous military awards.
Music
- Patricia Pinkston has been named Outstanding Music Educator of 1996 for the Southern Section of the California Music Educators Association and was also the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award at the California State Music Educators Convention earlier this year. A counselor in the Relief Society presidency of the Verdugo Hills 1st Ward, La Crescenta California Stake, Sister Pinkston has taught for 22 years in Glendale, Calif., schools. She has also been on the teaching staffs at BYU, the University of Utah, the University of Southern California and UCLA.
Academics
- Joe Hager of the Amarillo 4th Ward, Amarillo Texas Stake, won three best-in-class awards at the recent state industrial arts contest. He won awards for a chess board with pieces, a chess board without pieces and for his score on a test in power transportation. His designs were computer assisted. Joe, who has muscular dystrophy, recently graduated from Palo Duro High School.
- Kevin Dean Rees, a priest in the Brookshire Ward, Bennion Utah East Stake, is the Utah state winner of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America competition in the area of Electronics Technology. He represented Utah in the club's National competition in Kansas City, Mo., in June. He will be a senior this year at Taylorsville High School.
