Honors

- Rebecca "Becky" Darrington, 18, was named Miss Wyoming and participated in the Miss America pageant this month. As Miss Wyoming, she will spend the coming year helping improve the self-esteem of youth. She completed one year at Ricks College studying business. She is a member of the Gillette 1st Ward, Gillette Wyoming Stake.

- David Wilson, 16, has earned all 124 merit badges in the Boy Scout program, graduated from both high school and Pierce College in Puyallup, Wash., where he received an associate degree, won second place in a national history scholarship sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. He is a priest in the South Hill 3rd Ward, Puyallup Washington South Stake.

Appointments

- Hans J. Keil, a member of the Pesega 5th Ward, Pesega Samoa Stake, was appointed Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation and Shipping for Western Samoa recently. He has been a member of the Western Samoa Parliament since 1988.

- Leatufale Roy Brunt, of the Faleula Ward, Apia Samoa West Stake, won the seat of the Sagaga-Le-Falefa Constituency in parliament and is now serving a five-year term in the new government. He was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and a member of the Public Accounts Committee and the House Committee. He serves as the high priests group leader.

Athletics

- Nikki Davis, a 17-year-old field hockey player from Davis, Cal., was named the California State Games Athlete of the Year. She was chosen from 5500 participants in 17 sports, making her the first field hockey player to receive the award. The award is based on athletic ability and conduct on and off the field. Nikki also served as vice president of her senior class at Davis High School. She is a member of the Davis Ward in the Davis California Stake.

- James Ferguson, a priest in the Lincoln 3rd Ward of the Lincoln Nebraska Stake, earned a berth on the U.S. Junior Olympic wrestling team after winning the Greco-Roman 50 kilo division at the Junior World Trials in Atlanta, Ga. He represented the U.S. in Walbrzych, Poland, at the Junior World Wrestling Championships in August.

Music

- Mark W. Jenkins, 18, won first place in the student division of the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition at Blue Lake, Mich. He was also winner of the Nevada Governor's Scholarship to Interlochen camp. He will study music performance at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He is an elder in the Hacienda Heights Ward, Las Vegas Nevada South Stake.

Awards

- Brian Larsen, an elder in the Christiansburg Ward, New River Virginia Stake, was awarded first place in the Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan at the National DEX career development conference in Orlando, Fla. He competed against winners from most states in the country. Brian attends Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.

- L. Glade Boldt won first place in technical drafting in the National VICA Skills Championship. He is also a two-time Idaho state winner. He was awarded software and a scholarship to Idaho State University. He is a member of the Rupert 1st Ward, Rupert Idaho Stake.

- Joy Forrest, a junior at Gatesville High School in Gatesville, Texas, earned a gold medal after scoring perfect 100s in an event called interpersonal communication at the national Future Homemakers of America in St. Louis, Mo. She is a member of the Gatesville Texas Branch, Killeen Texas Stake.

Scouting

- Jacob Walters, of the Hyrum 3rd Ward, Hyrum Utah North Stake, was presented his 124th merit badge and 20th palm during a recent court of honor. He currently serves as secretary in the priests quorum and secretary in the Young Men presidency.

Business

- Matthew Dobberfuhl, a priest and Eagle Scout in the Barron Ward, Duluth Minnesota Stake, was a member of a three-person team that won third place in the entrepeneurship event at the National Future Business Leaders of America Convention in Washington D.C. recently.

- Deonna Price, of the Lincoln 2nd Ward, Lincoln Nebraska Stake, was given the Business Woman of the Year award at Ricks College. She also earned a two-year scholarship to Brigham Young University. She served in the Young Women organization at Ricks College.

Professional

- Jacques F. Pruhs, of Salt Lake City was awarded the Gordon Burt Affleck Award as the most outstanding purchasing manager in the Utah association. The award is sponsored by the National Association of Purchasing Management, Utah. He was employed by the Church Purchasing Division, Materials Management Department, before retiring. He and his wife, Kirsten, are now serving as temple missionaries in the Stockholm Sweden Temple.

- Dale Peterson of the Caldwell 3rd Ward, Caldwell Idaho Stake, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Idaho State Broadcasters Association. He served as president of the Idaho State Broadcasters Association, and as legislative liason with the Idaho delegation to Congress for the national broadcasters. The award comes in recognition of leadership in the broadcasting industry, and activity in civic and church affairs. He currently serves as the multi-stake public affairs director for 10 stakes in eastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho.

- Gary Wood, Los Angeles Harbor College public information officer, received three Public Relations Organization awards in the annual California Community College Public Relations Organization competition. Awards included placing first in the News Release category and third in the Feature Release and Sports Release categories. He serves as executive secretary in the Lomita Ward, Torrance California Stake.
