Last May, Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin of the Quorum of the Twelve visited the Tulsa, Okla., area. During his time there, he visited with Jim Wolfe, then-president of the Tulsa 5th [Singles] Branch.
Brother Wolfe, who since has been called as a high councilor, told Elder Wirthlin the progress of the members of the branch. As part of his report, he used a Aug. 6, 1994, issue of the Church News."I told him we had appeared in the `Shining Moments,' " Brother Wolfe said. In this article, branch members had helped a man whose semi-trailer had dumped its load of hay. The branch's elders quorum president had come upon the accident, drove to the meetinghouse to gather help, then drove back and helped the man reload the hay.
With the help of this article, Brother Wolfe was able to give a positive report on the benefits of the branch for single members.
During his time as branch president, Brother Wolfe also looked to such Church News sections as the "Viewpoint," and today, as a high councilor, he continues to use the publication for information and thoughts for talks. This way, he said, "I have the information directly from the General Authorities."
