My daughter and I had talked about joining the Church before we had moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., in 1994. After we arrived, we kind of put it off. Why, I don't know.
One day, I was sitting in my recliner watching a show when up the sidewalk came two young men wearing white dress shirts and ties. I knew that they were coming to our apartment. They did, and when I opened the door, they told me who they were and why they were there. I did not have to think twice whether I would let them in or not. One of the young men was Elder Issac Hertado from Utah, and the other was Elder Benjamin Gordon from Canada. We talked for a little while, and then they started teaching my daughter and me the first discussion and asked if we would read the Book of Mormon. We agreed.I read the whole book in about a week. I was then asked to pray about it, but I already knew that it was true.
These two young men have made a great difference in our lives and changed the way we live forever. I would like to thank them for fulfilling their missions the way they were asked. We were baptized Oct. 9, 1994, about a month after being visited by these elders, and our lives have done nothing but improve and get better. My daughter is the second counselor in the Mia Maid class, and I am the elders quorum secretary. I received my temple endowment Feb. 23, 1996.
The Church has really given us some direction in our lives. I know that it has been a big change for my daughter, but I think with the family togetherness that I have with her, we will be able to grow together in the Church. I am divorced, so that makes my job a little tougher, but she is the light of my life, and I love her more than she will ever know.
I hope that she works to find people just like us who are out there looking for the path back to our Heavenly Father. I hope that I can influence other people's lives the way that mine has been so that they, too, can realize the joy of knowing about the great plan our Heavenly Father has for us if we keep His commandments and do our temple work. This is the true Church, and I know that President Gordon B. Hinckley is the true prophet and that what he says is the truth.
