President Boyd K. Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve, spent his 72nd birthday, Sept. 10, at his office in the Church Administration Building. He spent the evening with family members.
President Packer was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Brigham City, Utah, to Ira Wright and Emma Jensen Packer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-46. He married Donna Smith in the Logan Temple on July 29, 1947; they are parents of 10 children.He was sustained as an Assistant to the Twelve on Sept. 30, 1961, and has been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve since April 1970. He was set apart as acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve on June 5, 1994, and again March 12, 1995.
An educator by training, President Packer is a former supervisor of seminaries and institutes of religion for the Church. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University and a doctorate in educational administration from Brigham Young University.
