President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, observed his 69th birthday Aug. 21. During the day, he attended to his regular Church duties. He spent the evening at a family gathering.
President Monson was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Salt Lake City to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson.In October 1963, when he was 36, he was called to the Council of the Twelve. He was called as second counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson on Nov. 10, 1985, as second counselor to President Howard W. Hunter on June 5, 1994, and as first counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley on March 12, 1995.
President Monson and his wife, Frances Johnson Monson, are the parents of two sons and a daughter; they have six grandchildren.
