Social Hall Plaza, a six-story office building that city officials say brings renewed vitality to historic Social Hall Avenue in Salt Lake City, was dedicated Sept. 4 by President Gordon B. Hinckley.
"What has been done here represents an effort on the part of Zion's Securities Corp. to make and keep this end of the city viable, alive, beautiful and attractive in every respect," said President Hinckley at the outdoor ceremony attended by scores of city and business leaders. Zion's Securities is a real estate development company owned by the Church.The building, which includes three levels of underground parking, is located at the east end of the street, on the southwest corner of Social Hall Avenue and 200 East.
Each of the six floors has approximately 27,000 square feet, totaling 162,000 square feet in all.
Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini praised the relationship the city has with the Church and Zion's Securities. "We have a tremendous partnership," she said. "We've worked together on so many projects."
President Hinckley echoed that sentiment, mentioning future downtown projects Zion's Securities is working on, including the Brigham Apartments a half-block up the street and a new building on the corner of South Temple and Main Street. He also referred to past projects such as the Eagle Gate Apartments, Gateway Apartments and Eagle Gate Plaza office building.
Social Hall Avenue is historic because of the building for which it was named. The Social Hall was built in Brigham Young's day and accommodated theatrical, social and educational functions. It was razed in 1922. The foundation of the building was unearthed in 1991 on the west end of the avenue and is now sheltered by a glass structure enclosing a museum that tells of the building's history.
