A collection of rare 19th century books, pamphlets and engravings from the New York Historical Society will be on display at the Museum of Church History and Art starting Sept. 28 and continuing through Jan. 12, 1998.
The books are part of an exhibition titled: From New York to Salt Lake that explores the beginnings of the Church and its movement through the Midwest to Utah."The exhibition in Salt Lake will be an expanded version of the one in New York," said Glen M. Leonard, museum director. "In both settings, visitors will see books, artifacts and art that neither organization has shown before."
Included are early editions of the Book of Mormon, missionary pamphlets and Latter-day Saint periodicals, plus literature and illustrations responding to these publications and challenging Church teachings.
Among the items being displayed for the first time are 19th century portraits of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and newly located paintings of early Church sites.
