Demolition of the Church-owned Deseret Gym, longtime landmark and physical fitness facility in downtown Salt Lake City, started Monday, June 16, when excavator's heavy equipment began chipping chunks of brick from the building. The gym and adjacent parking structure, located directly north of Temple Square, are being razed to make way for a new Church assembly building. Ground will be broken July 24 by President Gordon B. Hinckley for the new facility, which will seat about four times as many people as the historic Tabernacle that holds about 6,000. The new facility will be used for general conferences, Church-related events and other suitable activities.
