Marjorie Hinckley, wife of President Gordon B. Hinckley, was awarded the Pioneer Heritage Award for her ancestors' diligence and determination during their trek across the plains.
"I feel [this award] is for my ancestors, not me, because they are the ones that broke the trail," Sister Hinckley said. "We have a great heritage, you and I, even those that have just moved here recently."The award was presented during the Freedom Festival Gala awards dinner, July 3, as part of the annual Provo Freedom Festival.
Others receiving awards included Wayne and Florence Voorheis, parents of Elder Orin Voorheis who was shot recently while serving as a missionary in Argentina, and retired Air Force Gen. Robert Oaks.
Special guests included President Gordon B. Hinckley and BYU Pres. Merrill J. Bateman.
