President Gordon B. Hinckley is presented a Pioneer of Progress Award by Bob Evans at the 1997 Pioneer Luncheon in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building July 24. Honored in the category of "Education, Health and Welfare," President Hinckley was cited for spiritual leadership and for fostering sound education, health services and business development. Four others were honored: JoAnn Ottley, the Tabernacle Choir's voice coach and well-known soprano who has performed in operatic productions, concerts and recitals worldwide, received the Historic and Creative Arts Award. Dinesh C. Patel, co-founder of TheraTech, a Utah-based pharmaceutical company, received the Scientific and Technology Development Award. Karl Malone, power forward and lead player for the Utah Jazz and NBA's Most Valuable Player, was presented the Sportsmanship and Athletics Award. A posthumous Legacy Award was honored Jacob Edwin Garn, founder and first director of the Utah Aeronautics Commission; the award was accepted by his son, former U.S. Sen. Jake Garn. A display paying tribute to the award recipients was unveiled at the Utah State Capitol Building after the conclusion of the Days of '47 Parade.
