Ricks College varsity athletes have achieved a new high in academic excellence, according to the September 1997 issue of the Juco Review, the official magazine for the National Junior College Athletics Association. In the review, the NJCAA recently named its 1996-97 Spring Academic Teams-of-the-Year, and four Viking squads have been honored as national champions while three were named runners-up. The minimum combined grade-point average requirement for consideration as academic teams-of-the-year by the NJCAA is 3.0 or a B average.
Ranked No. 1 in the country were women's outdoor track and field, men's and women's basketball, and men's wrestling. The women's track and field team topped all Viking squads with a combined GPA of 3.55. Not only did this team rank No. 1 academically for the whole year, but was also second overall when the NJCAA put out an initial list last spring. The women's track and field team won the national track and field meet this year.
The wrestling team has been crowned academic national champions with a GPA of 3.37. The Ricks wrestlers won third place in the NJCAA wrestling finals in Bismarck, N.D.,
The men's and women's basketball teams are ranked No. 1 academically, with the Lady Vikings GPA of 3.49 being slightly better than the men who finished with 3.23.
Finishing the year ranked No. 2 in the classroom was the women's fast pitch softball team with a 3.21 GPA. The women finished third at the NJCAA softball tournament. Also runner-ups academically were the baseball team at 3.12, and the men's outdoor track and field squad with a GPA of 3.12.
No other NJCAA college came close to matching the academic performance of Ricks College athletes.
