- Following the conference of the Church in Winter Quarters, Wilford Woodruff described April 6, 1847, as a day "the heavens smiled upon us." Exactly 150 years later, President Gordon B. Hinckley, who conducted the session, called the day, "a great season of opportunity." A 20-minute video, featuring remarks by the First Presidency in prominent locations along the Mormon Trail, was shown during the Sunday morning session.
The Tabernacle Choir opened the session with "The Morning Breaks" and closed with a dramatic rendition of "Come, Come Ye Saints." The choir also sang, "Faith in Every Footstep," theme music written by K. Newell Dayley for the sesquicentennial year. The invocation was offered by Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi, president of the Tokyo Temple. Elder Dennis B. Neuenschwander offered the benediction. Both are members of the Seventy.
A special visitor at the session was Dr. Anatoly Leshinsky, specialist-expert of the department on relations of religious organizations of the presidential administration of the Russian Federation, and personal representative of President Boris Yeltsin.
