"We don't have to finish first. We just have to finish," Dale Murphy, former MVP of professional baseball's National League, said May 1 during Women's Conference at BYU.
Brother Murphy, who has been called to serve as president of the Massachusetts Boston Mission, spoke along with his wife, Nancy, in the Marriott Center on the topic, "Working Together as Eternal Companions: Creating a Home Dedicated to the Lord."Brother Murphy, who will begin his mission service in July, said: "The gospel is here to relieve the pressures of the world. We will withstand the pressure if we are diligent."
He explained that their family goal "is to create a home dedicated to the Lord," and added that the Holy Ghost as a force in the home "is comforting and powerful."
Sister Murphy spoke of the importance of doing the basics, such as holding regular family home evening, family scripture study and family prayer. She emphasized helping children be worthy of, to recognize and to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. "We won't always be there, but the Father will," she added.
As to inviting the Spirit into the home and into children's lives, Sister Murphy spoke of wholesome media. A good question, she said, was to ask: "Is it godly, or is it ungodly? Does it make you feel good, or fill you with darkness of any level?"
Speaking of helping children develop, she urged: "We have to make the time, and sometimes we have to take the time from something else."
She encouraged parents to rely on the Lord in rearing their children. "They are His children, too."
