50 years ago
A new hymn book for use in wards and branches was starting to roll off the presses after six years of working on the project by the Church Music Committee, the Sept. 22, 1948, Church News reported. The book, Hymns, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was expected to be available for general distribution in October. (The book was in use until it was replaced by the current hymn book in 1985.)
The hymn book included several new features. One was a four-part division of songs for general congregations, choirs, women's voices and men's voices. It also included "first line" and topical indexes. Many hymns were transposed to a key more fitting a general congregation.
