Athletics

- Brenda Barton-Whicker, four-year starter on the University of Utah women's volleyball team, was selected for the third consecutive year to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team. She is Utah's all-time career leader in four statistical categories, and was the team's Most Valuable Player the past three years. She was also chosen national player during the week of Sept. 16, 1997, and is currently a finalist in a national sportsmanship contest. She is a member of the Bountiful 45th Ward, Bountiful Utah East Stake.

- Stuart Kearsley of the Beavercreek Ward, Aloha Oregon Stake, was recently chosen AAAA Metro Wrestling Coach of the Year by other coaches in the district. He was recognized for the care he shows his wrestlers, both on the mat and in the classroom. He is the father of five and serves in the bishopric. He teaches Spanish and coaches football and wrestling.

Centenarian

- Florence Young of the Auckland 8th Ward, Auckland New Zealand Mt. Roskill Stake, celebrated her 100th birthday recently. Members joined in her retirement home to sing her favorite hymns. She was born Jan. 1, 1898, in London, England, but, as a young woman, spent 15 years in China helping a sick relative. With the advent of World War II, she immigrated to New Zealand. She was disenchanted with religion most of her life until missionaries taught her the gospel in 1970 when she joined the Church.

Professional

- Arthur Hasler of the Madison 1st Ward, Madison Wisconsin Stake, was recently honored as a "faculty shining star" by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The 89-year-old limnologist was cited for playing a crucial role in preserving the university's worldwide reputation. Brother Hasler still works a partial day in his office.

A pioneer in limnology, the scientific study of fresh water bodies, he is best known for discovering how salmon use their sense of smell while spawning to return to the streams of their birth.

- W. Steve Albrecht, accounting program director at BYU, was chosen as one of the 100 most influential accounting professionals in the nation by Accounting Today magazine.

He also serves as president of the American Accounting Association. His research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 articles, and he is the author or co-author of 16 books. He is a member of the Sunset Heights 2nd Ward, Orem Utah Sunset Heights Stake.

- Duane R. Perry, of the Brighton 2nd Ward, Salt Lake Brighton Stake, was selected by the board of directors of the American Association of Dental Maxillofacial Radiographic Technicians to serve as president of the national organization. The AADMRT is composed of dental x-ray technicians and related specialities serving the dental industry.
