Carmen O'Donnal, 75, the first convert in Central America, died Aug. 27, 1998, in Mesa, Ariz.

She and her husband, John, were the first matron and president of the Guatemala City Temple after it was dedicated in 1984. Sister O'Donnal was baptized in Guatemala on Nov. 13, 1948, and served as the first Relief Society president in Guatemala, and was stake Relief Society president when the Quetzaltenango Guatemala Stake was organized in 1975. She also served with her husband when he presided over the Guatemala Mission in 1976-77, and they opened the Guatemala Quetzaltenango Mission from 1977-79. She also served as assistant matron of the Mexico City Temple in 1983, and accompanied her husband when he presided over the Guatemala Missionary Training Center from 1990-91.In the 50 years since her baptism, membership in Central America has grown to 411,000 members in 78 stakes.
