- Despite a cold rain falling on Temple Square at the start of the 168th Semiannual General Conference, the atmosphere inside the Salt Lake Tabernacle was warm. Fostering a reverent hush was the Mormon Youth Chorus with the opening hymn, "I Need Thee Every Hour."

Music only seemed to add to the spirit of this opening session, Saturday morning, Oct. 3. The chorus, directed by Robert C. Bowden, poignantly performed musical selections, such as two sung consecutively, "Beautiful Savior" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul." Only adding to the reverence was a beautiful organ modulation between the two sacred hymns by accompanist Bonnie Goodliffe.

Conducting this session was President Gordon B. Hinckley. Conference-goers also listened to proceedings in overflow facilities in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square and the nearby Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Offering the invocation and benediction, respectively, were Elders Glenn L. Pace and Stephen A. West of the Seventy.
