Three members of the Second Quorum of the Seventy were sustained Saturday afternoon, April 5, to the First Quorum of the Seventy, bringing the total number in that quorum to 54.
Called to the First Quorum were:Sheldon F. Child, 59, currently living in Manila, Philippines, where he is president of the Philippines/Micronesia Area. He was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy April 6, 1996. Before his call as a General Authority, he was an Area Authority in the Utah North Area, president of the New York New York Mission, stake president and bishop. He studied at Utah State University and the University of Utah. Formerly president of R.C. Willey Home Furnishings, he was born in Ogden, Utah, to Mark Fay and Viola Criddle Child. He and his wife, Joan Haacke Child, have six children.
Quentin L. Cook, 57, currently living in Manila, Philippines, where he is first counselor in the Philippines/Micronesia Area presidency. He was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy April 6, 1996. Before his call as a General Authority, he was an Area Authority in the North America West Area, a regional representative, stake president and counselor, bishop and full-time missionary in the British mission. Elder Cook received a bachelor's degree in political science from Utah State University, and a law degree from Stanford University Law School. He is former vice chairman of Sutter/California Healthcare System and was president and chief executive officer of California Healthcare System. He was also former managing partner with a California law firm. He was born in Logan, Utah, to J. Vernon and Bernice Kimball Cook. He and his wife, Mary Gaddie Cook, have three children.
Francisco J. Vinas, 51, is currently living in Quito, Ecuador, as president of the South America North Area. He was sustained to the Second Quorum of the Seventy April 6, 1996. Before his call as a General Authority, he was an Area Authority in the Europe West Area, president of Argentina Salta Mission, regional representative, stake president, stake president's counselor, bishop and branch president. He received a bachelor's degree from I.A.V.A. in Uruguay. A former administrator for the Church Educational System in Spain and Uruguay, he was also finance worker in the area Presiding Bishopric's Office and product cost supervisor for Bayer Q.U. Ltd. He was born in Spain to Rafael and Sacramento Serrano de Vinas. He and his wife, Cristina Helena Gaminara de Vinas, have three children.
