Sixteen homes of Latter-day Saints were among those destroyed when tornadoes struck parts of Oklahoma and Kansas May 3.
Priesthood leaders immediately began to check on all Church members but, as of Church News deadline, could not get into some of the hardest-hit areas, which were closed to all but emergency services personnel.All missionaries in affected areas were reported safe and were volunteering to help in the clean-up and recovery work.
Within hours after the storms hit, the Oklahoma City bishops storehouse began distributing food and supplies to two relief centers providing meals and shelter to those left homeless near Tuttle, Okla.
One emergency center was housed in the First Baptist Church, while the other was located at the Tuttle Branch meetinghouse. Two semi-truck loads of additional food and supplies from the regional bishops storehouse in Dallas, Texas, replenished the Oklahoma City storehouse May 4.
In the Oklahoma City Oklahoma South Stake, leaders purchased plywood and plastic and distributed those items to anyone who needed to cover damaged roofs or windows. Members of the Norman Oklahoma Stake joined with civil authorities in clean-up and relief efforts.
