PROFESSIONAL

Marie Crook Brough was recently elected president of the American Foundation of Vision Awareness during the national meeting of the American Optometric Association Congress. The organization promotes awareness of eye care and quality of vision. She resides in Tennessee with her husband, Gary, and four children. They are members of the Walnut Grove Ward, Memphis Tennessee Stake.

Luiz Alfredo Vidal Carvalho, a member of the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Stake presidency, was awarded the Latin American Science Prize in Sao Paulo for his study of schizophrenia. The research was conducted during a one-year period in conjunction with the World Psychiatry Society.

YOUTH

James Smith of the Lodi 2nd Ward, Lodi California Stake and a student at Lodi High School, won first place in the nationwide Future Business Leaders of America competition in the machine transcription event.

ATHLETICS

Stacey de Leon, a Laurel in the Raymondville Branch, Raymondville Texas Stake, recently won second place nationally in the SHW Division of the NASA National Powerlifting meet. She was one of more than 100 participants who qualified by winning at the state level.

CENTENARIANS

Ray L. Alston, a member of the Holladay 25th Ward, Salt Lake Holladay South Stake, recently celebrated his 103rd birthday. He was born Sept. 22, 1895 and has lived during the presidency of 12 presidents of the Church, beginning with Wilford Woodruff. He has four children, 15 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He married Pearl Southwick in the Salt Lake Temple on May 24, 1928. She died May 26, 1994, after 66 years of marriage. He served in many Church callings, and as a member and president of the Days of '47 committee for many years.

Sybil Rubini was honored by family, friends and ward members during five days of visits as part of her 106th birthday celebration recently. She was born Sept. 22, 1892, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where her great-grandfather had settled after moving with the Church from Nauvoo in 1846. Her father later moved the family to Seattle, Wash., where her musical talent led her to perform in Seattle's finest theaters. She is a member of the Shorecrest Ward, Seattle Washington Shoreline Stake.
