An official announcement signed by President Lorenzo Snow in the Dec. 7, 1898, Deseret Evening News stated: "The Deseret News, with all its properties and appurtenances, has reverted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by which it is now owned and controlled."

Since 1892, the ownership had been in the hands of the George Q. Cannon family.

President Snow's announcement said that Charles W. Penrose would manage the editorial department and Horace G. Whitney the business matters, effective Jan. 1, 1899.

The announcement continued: "It is the intention to make the Deseret News a first-class family newspaper containing information of current events from the most reliable sources in all parts of the world. Also to make its utterances such as will be acceptable to the members of the Church and to fair-minded people generally."
