Then-Elder Lorenzo Snow drowned after a boat he was traveling in capsized in Hawaii in 1864. Islanders who witnessed the accident pulled Elder Snow and his companions from the water, but it was 20 minutes before Elder Snow showed any signs of life. In an address given in 1919, President Heber J. Grant said of the incident, "But for the blessings of the Lord in resuscitating Lorenzo Snow [who became Church president in 1898 and served for three years], he would not have lived because he was drowned upon that occasion."
