The Savior's name is synonymous with his acts of compassion.

His loving example and teachings are the inspiration of the church welfare program — which seeks to relieve suffering and foster self-reliance.

The welfare program has grown to meet the ever-increasing needs of an expanding church.

The temporal and the spiritual are inseparably linked.

"As we give of our time, talents and resources to tend the needs of the sick, offer food to the hungry and teach the dependent to stand on their own, we enrich ourselves spiritually beyond our ability to comprehend."

The Lord's way consists of helping people help themselves. When members are doing all they can but still cannot meet needs, the church stands ready to help.

The church does not limit its relief efforts to its members.

Families need to review their own level of self-reliance.

Spend wisely, avoid debt and idleness, teach children to work and understand tithing, seek education and contribute fast offerings.
