On Sunday afternoon, in the closing moments of the 169th Annual General Conference, President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that the Church would rebuild the Nauvoo Temple, destroyed by fire two years after the Saints were driven out the city in 1846.
The congregation waited with anticipation as President Hinckley explained he felt "impressed" to make the historic announcement, then began to stir with excitement with the realization that the Church's second temple would be rebuilt.
President Thomas S. Monson, first counselor in the First Presidency, conducted the session. Music was provided by the Tabernacle Choir, directed by Craig Jessop with Richard Elliott at the organ. Selections included: "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," "Love One Another," "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" and "Come Follow Me."
Elder J. Kent Jolley and Elder Richard J. Maynes, both of the Seventy, offered the invocation and the benediction, respectively.
