German members help refugees

BONN, Germany — At the headquarters of the German Red Cross here, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Seventy and president of the Europe West Area, recently presented $100,000 to the organization to help refugees in Kosovo.

"This is a gift from the German Saints to help those in need," said Elder Uchtdorf, explaining that the members who contributed were not rich.

Elder Uchtdorf noted that 5,000 hygiene kits had also been assembled by the German Saints to give to refugees. "This is a tangible gift that can be given. They have a desire to follow Christ's admonition to help those in need," he said.

Johannes Richert, head of the Humanitarian Aid and Development Department of the German Red Cross, expressed appreciation for the gift that will "put food in hungry mouths and clean water in parched throats, and give blankets for those who are cold and soap to clean the body and lift the spirit."

AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND AREA

Missionaries fill 65,000 sandbags

SYDNEY, Australia — More than 230 missionaries here worked together in response to one of this country's worst national disasters.

Approximately 20,000 homes in Sydney had their roofs damaged during a freak hail storm recently. The roofs needed to be covered with plastic tarps that were secured by sandbags. The missionaries filled more than 65,000 sandbags.

Serving in the Australia Sydney South and North missions, the elders and sisters said they were overwhelmed with the feeling that they were making a difference in the lives of people.

City officials came to the site where the missionaries were filling sandbags to thank them for their efforts.
