Seven Church members from the Rivera Uruguay Stake were killed and two critically injured when a van transporting them to the Buenos Aires Argentina Temple collided with a truck July 15. The driver of the van, who was not a member of the Church, was killed, also. The accident occurred 85 miles north of Buenos Aires. A bus and another van in the temple excursion were not involved in the accident.
Killed were: Carlos Andres Roman, 23; Ana Gabriela Duarte, 14; Mariela Carrequi, 38, and her two daughters, Aline Antunez Carrequi, 8; Caren G. Antunez Carrequi, 20; Carol A. Barboza, 25; and Matias Franco Chineppe, 15.
Injured were: Maria Virginia Gomes, 20; and Julio Cesar Duarte, 18, a brother of Ana Gabriela Duarte, who died.
The First Presidency offered condolences, saying, "We express deep sorrow over this tragedy and extend to all those involved our sincerest sympathy."
