The Church's new assembly building, north of Temple Square, is steadily moving toward completion two years after President Gordon B. Hinckley and his counselors, President Thomas S. Monson and President James E. Faust, broke ground on Pioneer Day, 1997. Some parts of the building are in the finishing stages of construction, such as the southeast corner in the photo above, according to Thomas Hanson, project manager for the building for the Church. He said other parts of the building are still in the early construction stages. When completed, the building's main hall will seat more than 20,000 for general conferences, pageants, musical performances and other events. Landscaping work is also beginning on the plaza surrounding the structure.
