RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Youth from 11 stakes in the Rio de Janeiro area recently joined forces with some 200 full-time missionaries from the Brazil Rio de Janeiro North Mission to complete a massive service project in honor of the 500th anniversary of the founding of Brazil.

The youth and missionaries prepared more than 3,000 newborn kits for underprivileged mothers and distributed more than 1,000 in hospitals and other locations. The kits contained clothing, diapers and hygiene supplies for babies.

Many of the mothers had nothing with which to care for their babies and received the kits with words of love and appreciation, filled with emotion.

"These experiences edified the lives of the missionaries and members of the Church," said mission Pres. David L. Beck.

The project, coordinated by the Multistake Public Affairs Council of Rio de Janeiro, was covered by local and national radio and television stations. The supplies for the kits were donated by the Church, private businesses and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

Elder Athos M. Amorim of the Seventy and member of the presidency of the Brazil South Area, and his wife, Maria Alice, took part in the project.

"Today is a special day for my wife and myself," he said. "We have had the opportunity to help the youth of the Church accomplish a great project for the community. At the same time, it has helped shape the image of the Church in the community."

The day of service concluded with testimonies, music and inspirational messages.
