I beheld that the faithful elders of this dispensation, when they depart from mortal life, continue their labors in the preaching of the gospel of repentance and redemption, through the sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son of God, among those who are in darkness and under the bondage of sin in the great world of the spirits of the dead. D&C 138:57
Last December I was in the meeting room of the St. George Temple, waiting for a session to begin. I started reading about Joseph F. Smith's vision because I wanted so much to be comforted and to understand what was happening.
John, my husband of 30 years was only 64 years old, and was dying of cancer. We had planned to go on a mission, to grow old and to finish out this life together. Now through death he was leaving me.
Although I had read this section many times, that day this scripture seemed to take on new meaning for me. I knew exactly what John was going to be doing when he left me, and I knew how happy that would make him as he was a faithful home teacher and loved to tell everyone about the gospel. He was very comforted when I read the scripture to him and he had me read it several times in the next few weeks.
After John passed away in January 1999, whenever the grandchildren came to visit me, they would ask what I thought Grandpa was doing. I was able to show them this scripture and it seemed to comfort them as it did me. Now I search the scriptures as I work toward finding out what the Lord has for me to do until the time I can be with my husband again. Sandra B. Rabideau, Hurricane, Utah.
