Two General Authorities were given emeritus status during conference. They are Elder Joe J. Christensen and Elder Andrew W. Peterson, both of the Seventy.

Elder Christensen, who served in the Presidency of the Seventy from 1993 until Aug. 15, 1999, was sustained to the Seventy on April 1, 1989. At the time of his call, he was serving as president of Ricks College, culminating a 30-year career with the Church Educational System. He also served as associate commissioner of CES and several times as an institute director.

He was president of the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, and was a mission president in Mexico, counselor in the general Sunday School presidency, and general board member of the Melchizedek Priesthood MIA. As a General Authority, he served in area presidencies in the Brazil and North America Northwest areas. He and his wife, Barbara, are serving as president and matron of the San Diego California Temple.

Elder Peterson was sustained to the First Quorum of the Seventy on Oct. 1, 1994, and served as counselor and president in the Mexico North Area presidency. Prior to serving as a General Authority, he served as president of the Mexico Merida Mission, regional representative and stake president.

He was a dentist and did considerable volunteer work locally and with the Utah-Bolivia Partners. In September 1997, he suffered a serious accident during a family outing near Salt Lake City, and experienced paralyzing injuries from which he continues to recover.
