PROVO, Utah Three years ago when it seemed much of the BYU campus was under construction Pres. Merrill J. Bateman compared the numerous projects at the university to open-heart surgery.
Then, crews were digging a hole the size of the Marriott Center in the middle of the quad south of the school's administration building and had torn apart much of the Wilkinson student center. The Carl F. Eyring Science Center and the Howard W. Hunter Law Library at the J. Reuben Clark Law School were both under construction, as was the Wyview Park married-student housing complex.
Warren Jones, BYU assistant director of planning, said all the buildings are now operational and all but the Harold B. Lee Library expansion, under the school's quad, have been dedicated or rededicated an indication that the major campus surgery is over.
BYU students and faculty, once inconvenienced by the construction, are now benefiting from the university's efforts to keep their facilities up to date, said Brother Jones. And as a result the heart of the campus, the student center and quad, are beating better than ever.
The following projects at BYU are still under construction:
- The Harold B. Lee Library: While the
234,000-square-foot addition is complete, sections of the original
structure are now being remodeled, said Brother Jones. The library should
be rededicated next fall.
- The old McDonald Health Center building:
Left vacant when the new BYU Student Health Center was constructed on the
northeast end of campus, the structure is currently being renovated. The
McDonald Building, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 2000,
will house offices and information technology services.
- Helaman Halls: Renovations are taking
place in the Helaman Halls dormitory complex. This spring, the fifth of
eight buildings in the housing complex will be completely remodeled, said
Brother Jones.
- Aspen Grove: Off campus, a new lodge at
the BYU-owned Aspen Grove is also currently being built. It should be
completed by June 2000.
