Ground will be broken for the reconstruction of the Nauvoo Illinois Temple Oct. 24 — despite early concerns that the Nauvoo City Council might not grant a building permit.

While the city council never objected to the building of the temple, it denied the Church's original building permit application because council members wanted more time to consider the impact of the temple on traffic and tourism, said Loren Burton, Nauvoo public affairs director for the Church.

Elder Burton praised the mayor and the city council for their work — which included holding three town meetings and surveying residents — to resolve their concerns. They granted the permit Oct. 19.

As a result, Elder Burton said, people are looking forward to the groundbreaking.

"We now move ahead," he said. "The Nauvoo Temple will be a marvelous asset to the community and to the Church."
