PROVO, Utah A new meetinghouse that doubles as BYU classrooms was
dedicated Sunday, Dec. 12, and hailed as a "wave of the future."
The building was dedicated by Elder Henry B. Eyring of the Quorum of the Twelve and Commissioner of the Church Educational System.
"There is something in this experience that will be of tremendous importance for education and our religious reach across the world," he said.
The new building, the University Parkway Center located near Cougar Stadium on the BYU campus, is home to two student stakes on Sundays and evenings, and to the English Language Center during the week.
The meetinghouse "could serve as the prototype for what the Church does across the earth," said Elder Merrill J. Bateman of the Seventy and BYU president. "Since coming to the campus as the president, I've had a very strong feeling that we need to combine the secular and the sacred. The Lord's school doesn't have a dividing line. Life doesn't have a dividing line."
While there are other buildings on campus used in dual capacities, this is the first building designed to be used for both ecclesiastical and academic purposes. The building includes two chapels, a cultural hall, classrooms, offices, computer labs and a library.
