VANCOUVER, Wash. Jerold D. Ottley, retired conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle choir, shared his knowledge and talents with Church members in the greater Portland-Vancouver area recently.
Brother Ottley, who still serves as volunteer technical director of the Temple Square Chorale (a training school for the Tabernacle Choir), and his wife, JoAnn, were invited to conduct special seminars at the annual Portland Regional Music Festival. The festival, held at the Beaverton Oregon Stake Center, is a weekend series of concerts and workshops for the benefit of Church members in the area.
The workshop began with a concert in which Sister Ottley performed. She is retired voice coach for the Tabernacle Choir and is volunteer voice coach for the Temple Square Chorale. Brother Ottley served as a guest conductor of the Northwest LDS Symphony during the event.
"What a powerful inspiration he had on our 50 musicians: members and non-members alike," said Gary Parks, principal conductor of the symphony. "They sparkled during the performance, thanks to his spirit."
Showing his lighter side, Brother Ottley prefaced his performance by telling the capacity audience, "Since I am semiretired, but still conducting, I guess I am a semi-conductor."
There were standing ovations for both Brother and Sister Ottley. They concluded the conference by speaking at a fireside.
