Young people have many lessons to learn to prepare them to become leaders in the church. Elder Hillam said there are three particular lessons he considers essential.

The first is to develop a sense of respect for things that are sacred and a respect for elders. "Temples, church buildings and your home should command your respect because they are sacred." All that the Lord has revealed is sacred, and one's body is also sacred. "The apostle Paul spoke of our bodies as temples, given to us from God."

The second essential lesson is to learn the commandments and choose to obey them. "You learn the commandments by being instructed. That is why family home evening, Sunday classes and seminary are so important. You know the commandments by the Spirit through prayer, your own personal study and by your personal revelation."

The third essential lesson is to develop a love for the Savior. "Knowing about the Savior is a natural part of your religious education. Knowing the Savior comes from the laboratory of life. Knowing requires personal obedience, prayer, a closeness to the spirit and revelation."

Parents, church leaders and teachers "are all responsible to teach and lead these wonderful young men and young women and touch their lives by our example."

"Every leader and teacher in every part of the world has a responsibility to teach the gospel by the Spirit. The boys and girls you teach have the potential to become outstanding fathers and mothers as well as revered future leaders of the church."
