Living worthy to receive the companionship of the Holy Ghost is the most important help available in searching for a personal testimony. Such companionship brings confirmation and absolute assurance.
The mission of the Holy Ghost is to reveal the truth of heaven to those who qualify to receive it.
Members would do well to review the steps Nephi described in the Book of Mormon to invite the Holy Ghost.
"First, don't harden your heart. Seek to know. In other words, have an intense, consuming desire to know. Give a place for a seed to be planted in your heart."
Second, ask in faith. "In the process of asking for knowledge, we have to exercise faith _ believing before receiving."
Faith that is based on personal prayer, study and obedience is more lasting than blind faith, more rewarding and better grounded.
"Third, keep the commandments." Maybe the best way to define a testimony would be by looking at what a testimony represents.
"It is to say, 'I will go and do the things which the Lord has commanded, for I know."'
Those with a testimony never give up, but to stand as an example and are patient in afflictions.
Having such a conviction, members know that 'Jesus Christ is the son of God, the Father of heaven and earth, the creator of all things from the beginning.' Yes, these and many other characteristics and actions model a testimony."
