The reaction of LDS Church members to the new Conference Center mirrored the feeling church leaders spoke of during the first day of meetings to be held there.

"A miracle has been accomplished because of uncommon devotion and sacrifice far beyond industry standard," said Bishop H. David Burton, presiding bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "To use the word I often hear, it's awesome."

Indeed, people leaving the Saturday afternoon session in the new building confirmed what Bishop Burton had heard.

Mariann Wenhaug of Norway had attended conference in the Tabernacle 20 years ago. "It's just awesome. Last night we drove around the building. It is huge. But even though it is so big, I could really feel the spirit there."

Tamra Duerden grew up in Bountiful and had not attended conference sessions in person "because they kept telling us 'save it for the people from out of town.' " She attended conference in the Tabernacle for the first time one year ago, knowing its days as the conference venue were numbered. Now, she finds the Conference Center "just like President Hinckley described it — functional but warm. You just feel like you are right at home."
