On April 6, 2000, the 170th anniversary of the organization of the Church and at the most sacred site in Church history, President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Palmyra New York Temple. The dedicatory services for the Church's 77th temple were carried by satellite to members gathered in meetinghouses in six time zones and in seven languages, comprising the largest ever such congregation to take part in a temple dedication.
A dramatic change in the chilly, windy and overcast day occurred as
President Hinckley and others left the temple to participate in the
cornerstone ceremony. For a brief period, the sun shone and the wind
ceased.
Also participating at the first session were President Boyd K. Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve, and Elder W. Craig Zwick of the Seventy and president of the North America Northeast Area.
