PROVO, Utah — Music is a gift from a loving Father in Heaven to bring peace and light into the lives of mankind, said Joy Saunders Lundberg.

During BYU's Family Expo April 4, Sister Lundberg, a composer who has written more than 150 songs, listed numerous ways music can bless families:

  • The right kind of music calms family contention. "Appropriate music can calm the soul and bring the Spirit of the Lord into a home," Sister Lundberg said.

  • The right kind of music keeps youth on track. "President Ezra Taft Benson, in a talk he gave to the youth, said, 'We encourage you to listen to uplifting music, both popular and classical, that builds the spirit. . . . Don't listen to music that is degrading.' "

  • The right kind of music improves grades and learning ability. Sister Lundberg explained that research indicates that music can modify brain activity in children and can improve their cognitive skills.

  • The right kind of music helps Church members teach and learn true principles. "President Boyd K. Packer said, 'We are able to feel and learn very quickly through music.' "

  • The right kind of music helps heal sickness. Sister Lundberg said music therapy ranks high on the list of modern-day management of critical care patients.

  • The right kind of music connects one with the Savior. "Sometimes the best expressions of gratitude for a great sacrament meeting or conference are given through the singing of a closing hymn," she said. " . . . Sometimes the Spirit can speak to us through music."
