SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Members of the Scottsdale Arizona North Stake Relief Society recently participated in a humanitarian service project focusing on the needs of their local community by donating 2,700 new and used books to "Reach Out and Read" an early pediatric inner city literacy program.
Pediatricians and nurses in 10 inner city clinics in the Phoenix, Ariz., area present books to young patients upon completion of well-baby visits. The service provides many children with their first experience with books.
Women from the seven wards in the stake collected books for more than three months for the project.
"These efforts served to remind us of the importance of literacy and the benefits of sharing books with our own children from a very early age," said Margaret Gooch, a counselor in the stake Relief Society presidency.
