Following a mining disaster in Utah on May 11, 1900, the Church made the largest donation to a relief fund for the families of the victims, it was announced in the Deseret News published that day.
An explosion in Winter Quarters coal mine near Scofield in eastern Utah on May 1 killed more than 200 men, many of them members of the Church, in Utah's deadliest disaster ever.
Accompanying the Church's donation to the relief fund was a letter from President Lorenzo Snow that stated: "I herewith enclose check for $2,500 in your favor as a subscription from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the fund now being raised in behalf of the sufferers of the late Scofield disaster."
Elders Heber J. Grant, Reed Smoot and George Teasdale of the Quorum of the Twelve had offered comforting words as speakers at a memorial service for the fallen miners held in Scofield on Sunday, May 6.
