Honor thy . . . mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Exodus 20:12
Speaking at the April 1988 general conference priesthood session, Elder James E. Faust, then of the Quorum of the Twelve, quoted an earlier First Presidency statement: "Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind" (Messages of the First Presidency, 6:178.)
He then added: "A man who fails to gratefully acknowledge his debt to his own mother who gave him life is insensitive to the Holy Spirit."
