SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Members of the Wilford Ward, Salt Lake Wilford Stake — named for President Wilford Woodruff — celebrated their ward's 100th anniversary recently by hosting a barbecue at the Sugarhouse Park here.
The Wilford Ward was organized Sept. 30, 1900, from a division of the Mill Creek Ward, and was located in the Granite Stake. Apostle Heber J. Grant organized the ward. At the time of the organization, the ward boundaries covered most of the western and southern areas of the Salt Lake Valley.
The ward chapel was completed in 1900 and the original roof was fashioned after the famous domed roof of the Salt Lake Tabernacle. The roof proved to be unstable and was later replaced with a more conventional gabled roof. The building was dedicated by President Lorenzo Snow, who was president of the Church at the time. Although the meetinghouse has undergone many additions and renovations over the years, ward members are still meeting in the original building.
About 450 ward and former ward members were in attendance at the picnic. Games were provided for the children.
