People in the Church

Centenarian

Elizabeth Broadbent Smith of the Cardston 5th Ward, Cardston Alberta West Stake, celebrated her 100th birthday on Sept. 1. Born in Cardston of pioneer parents, Sister Smith has been a faithful member of the Church. She served in Primary, Young Women and Relief Society presidencies and was also a teacher in each of those organizations. For many years she was a temple ordinance worker. In 1919, she married Clarence Lamb Smith and they were sealed in the Cardston Alberta Temple when it opened in 1923. He died in 1965. Sister Smith currently has 205 direct descendents.

Academics

Alexandra Harrison, 11, of the Huntington 2nd Ward, Charleston West Virginia Stake, won national recognition in the PTA Cultural Arts Reflections Program. She was one of only three "Awards of Excellence" winners in her category after taking first place in state competition. Her essay, "Anything Is Possible," was about several people she knows who have overcome the hardships of disabilities.

Athletics

Aaron Christensen of the Maple Ridge Ward, Abbotsford British Columbia Stake, was named the top male athlete in the province by Basketball B.C. last spring and this month began school at Simon Fraser University on a full-ride basketball scholarship. The 6-foot-8-inch young man, who was co-valedictorian for his 2000 graduating class at Pitt Meadows secondary school, also works as a construction worker and blueberry farmer to raise money for his mission. He recently turned down an invitation by the Canadian National Basketball team to join them in a tournament because he said he was too busy earning money for his mission.
