KOWLOON, Hong Kong More than 1,200 teenagers participated in a "LDS Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament" organized by the Hong Kong Kowloon East Stake in August.
A total of 280 teams competed for the championships of five categories, with the semi-final and the final competitions completed on Aug. 19 and Aug. 26 respectively.
The opening ceremony, attended by more than 450 people, was held Aug. 12. Elder Cree-L Kofford of the Seventy, along with the guest-of-honor, Mr. Lee Wah Ming, a member of the First LEGCO of the Hong Kong SAR Government, jointly officiated at the opening ceremony. They shared words of encouragement and personal insights with the participants. The ceremony was followed by two demonstration games performed by the missionaries and the champions of the last year's tournament.
Formerly named, "Kwun Tong District 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament" and co-sponsored with Kwun Tong District Council, the tournament was started in 1996. Organizers hoped to arouse an interest in basketball among young people and promote individuals' well-being through wholesome activities. The event was also meant to unify the community and to encourage team spirit.
The tournament has received tremendous support from the community and an impressive response from the young people. An estimated 160 youngsters participated in 1996; 250 participants in 1997; 400 in 1998; and more than 700 in 1999. This year, which marks the fifth anniversary of the tournament, more than 1,200 people participated.
