LAIE, Hawaii — BYU-Hawaii ranks as the 11th top liberal arts college in the western region, according to "America's Best Colleges," the 2001 edition issued by U.S. News & World Report.

The new ranking moves the Church-owned university three notches above last year's 14th ranking, while retaining its "first tier" status — the top 25 percent of the universities in the west.

"We are thrilled by this report, which confirms what we believe about the quality of education at BYU-Hawaii," said Eric B. Shumway, president of BYU-Hawaii. "This report accounts for what we can provide students with in terms of academics, but there is also a lot to be said about the spiritual and moral environment of our university."

The feature article used 16 measures of academic excellence, including a school's academic reputation, student to faculty ratio, class sizes and student selectivity. BYU-Hawaii ranked first in the student selectivity category, taking into account "abilities and ambitions of the students" through test scores, the proportion of enrolled freshmen who graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school classes and the ratio of students who enroll to those admitted.

In 1955, President David O. McKay prophesied, "You mark my word, from this school, I tell you, will go men and women whose influence will be felt for good towards the establishment of peace internationally." BYU-Hawaii is one of the most internationally diverse universities in the nation and strives to educate international leaders.
